ADR, Average Damage Per Round, tells you how much damage you dealt to enemies per round across an entire match. Unlike kills, it captures every shot you land, every grenade you throw, and every engagement you win or lose, not just the moments where you landed the finishing bullet.
A player who deals 80 damage to three enemies before being traded out is genuinely contributing to the round. Their K/D doesn't reflect that. Their ADR does.

Most players in casual matchmaking average 55-65 ADR. Reaching 70+ puts you above the majority of CS2 players. Maintaining 80+ consistently is the hallmark of a genuinely impactful fragger.
K/D (kill/death ratio) only counts the final bullet. ADR counts every bullet.
Here's a concrete example of why this matters:
Player A: 20 kills, 15 deaths in a 26-round match. K/D = 1.33. Sounds good.
Player B: 15 kills, 12 deaths in the same match, but dealt 780 additional damage across rounds where they were eliminated, damage that set up teammates' kills. K/D = 1.25. ADR tells a completely different story.
Player A's ADR: 1,600 damage ÷ 26 rounds = 61.5 ADR
Player B's ADR: 1,950 damage ÷ 26 rounds = 75.0 ADR
Player B was more impactful despite the lower K/D. ADR captures the full picture.

Professional CS2 players consistently maintain ADR in the 75-95 range depending on their role. Here's how roles affect ADR expectations:

The round count denominator means that longer matches make it slightly harder to maintain high ADR, you have more rounds across which to average, and late-match rounds where economy forces half-buys or eco rounds can drag the average down.
One round can theoretically produce up to 500 ADR, dealing 100 HP of damage to all five enemies. In practice this never happens. Realistic maximum per-round damage is:
ADR above 100 for a full match means you consistently dealt damage to multiple enemies per round, a marker of aggressive, multi-engagement play.
This is the single highest-leverage improvement available. Crosshair at head height before every corner and angle means that when an enemy appears, your first shot deals 111 damage (headshot with a rifle) instead of 37 (body shot). Every headshot is nearly triple the ADR contribution of a body shot.
Practical drill: In a casual or deathmatch server, focus only on where your crosshair is when you're not in a gunfight, walking through corridors, pre-aiming corners, moving between areas. The crosshair should always be at shoulder-to-head height on the wall or geometry where an enemy might appear.
In rounds where you're going to die, deal damage first. A player who takes 70 damage before trading a kill contributes 70 ADR for that round even though they died. A player who panics, pre-fires and misses, then dies contributes 0 ADR.
The mindset shift: change from "don't die" to "always deal damage." In aggressive entry situations, your job is to open the site and take damage, your ADR contribution makes that trade worthwhile even if K/D suffers.
HE grenades, Molotovs, and incendiary grenades all deal damage that counts toward ADR. A well-placed HE at a known position deals 50-80 damage to an enemy. A Molotov that forces a player out of position while dealing 40 damage contributes to your ADR in rounds you might never fire your rifle.
Specific situations to use damaging utility:
Passive play, sitting in a corner waiting for enemies to walk past, has two ADR problems: you deal damage to at most one or two enemies per round, and you often deal it too late in the round to influence the outcome. Proactive positioning, taking angles that let you deal early damage and create trades, consistently produces higher ADR.
This doesn't mean playing recklessly. It means choosing positions that put you in contact with enemies earlier in the round rather than later.
Pistol round ADR is often significantly lower than rifle-round ADR because players spray more on pistols and deal partial damage without killing. On the Glock and USP-S specifically, the headshot is the kill shot. Practising the one-tap headshot in deathmatch on pistols improves your pistol round ADR and your overall match ADR significantly.

ADR is the most direct single-number measure of how much damage you contributed. It is not the only measure, a player with 55 ADR who flashes every site open and calls perfectly is contributing enormously in ways ADR can't measure. But as a baseline indicator of individual offensive output, nothing is more honest.
At the professional level, player ADR is one of the most widely cited statistics for evaluating individual performance and form. A star player's ADR across a tournament tells you how impactful they were, not just whether they hit shots, but whether they consistently generated damage pressure every round.
